March 20, 2022, is World Oral Health Day, a day that aims to empower people with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to secure good oral health. For children born with a cleft lip or cleft palate, proper dental care is especially important. The treatment that patients receive through Operation Smile extends beyond surgery, as they are provided with oral health education and resources to support healthy smiles for a lifetime.

Drs. Priyanka Naidu and Zach Collier are guests on Global Scalpels: A Global Surgery Podcast. To increase the accessibility of safe and affordable surgery globally, they discuss the use of hackathons, self-assessments, apps, language translation, and dynamic education materials that can augment surgical training and effectively address the current gap in surgical knowledge.

Mairead O’Callaghan, Operation Smile’s UK executive director says, "The year 2022 is a milestone for Operation Smile. It marks 40 years since our founders Dr Bill and Kathy Magee took part in their first cleft surgical mission to the Philippines. To commemorate this achievement Operation Smile is launching into 10 years of ambitious growth, impact and transformation."

Dr. Samantha Jackson-Dilts joined Fox5 Washington DC on National Women Physicians Day to discuss her critical role with the global nonprofit, Operation Smile.

People affected by cleft conditions are more susceptible to illness, they could struggle to eat or maintain a healthy weight. The psychological effects can lead to not being socially accepted. West Valley Pediatric Hospitalist, Dr. Shelly Batra says a cleft condition is a source of isolation, especially for those in underserved communities.

Dr. Naidu describes herself as a medical doctor, aspiring reconstructive surgeon and clinician-scientist. Constantly trying to marry the worlds of medicine, research, art, and humanitarianism. Passionate about global surgery and committed to improving surgical care and health systems in South Africa and other low- and middle-income countries. She talks to Africa Briefing about a new, innovative app that is based on local flap surgery and reconstruction of a variety of conditions on any part of the body.

The organization created the Anthony L. and Hideko S. Burgess Interactive Learning Center (ILC) to help people walk in the footsteps of patients, their families and volunteers. The center shows the organization's work through the perspectives of nine patients. The center officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Operation Smile's co-founders Dr. Bill Magee and Kathy Magee, along with NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Smith gave remarks.
