A Mother’s Worry Becomes Hope for Her Son’s Future

Eunice once feared what a cleft condition would mean for her son. After surgery, she can’t wait to show Lukas the world.

A Mother’s Hope and New Beginning for Her Son: Luka’s New Smile

When Eunice first held her newborn son, she imagined the future every mother hopes for. Then she saw that Lukas had been born with a cleft condition, and excitement turned to worry.

“I got very worried,” Eunice recalled. “I asked the doctors, how will my child be fed?”

Lukas was her third child, but nothing had prepared her for this. Children born with cleft conditions often struggle to feed, and Eunice needed answers fast. Local health care providers gave her one: Operation Smile.

A Family Finds a Path Forward

Over the next 16 months, the Operation Smile team supported Lukas as he grew strong enough for surgery. Eunice learned to navigate an unfamiliar world while holding onto hope that her son would grow up with confidence.

That hope carried them more than five hours to an Operation Smile surgical program in Mombasa, Kenya. As surgery day approached, fear and gratitude arrived together. Eunice trusted the medical team, but she could not know what waited on the other side.

Then came the moment everything changed.

After surgery, Eunice was reunited with Lukas. Seeing his new smile, she felt an overwhelming rush of joy.

“My child will be so sharp. I will be very proud to walk with him everywhere,” she said.

Months of fear gave way to pride. A new smile had given Eunice a new sense of what her son’s future could hold.

Every Child Deserves This Chance

Lukas’ story is also our story. We believe every child deserves access to high-quality surgical care, no matter where they are born. Through Operation 100, Operation Smile is working to bring care closer to families and expand access to essential cleft treatment by investing in frontline health workers and strengthening district hospitals. Through this bold commitment, we hope to help patients like Lukas and his community to have access to the care they need closer to where they live.

Comprehensive care means more than surgery. It means nutrition support, speech therapy, psychosocial care and guidance for families at every stage of their child’s growth. It means a mother in Mombasa does not have to face her fears alone.

Lukas is one child among thousands we are privileged to serve. His story reflects what is possible when barriers to care fall away: a family that once faced uncertainty now looks toward the future with confidence. Together, with the dedication of our medical volunteers and the generosity of our supporters, we can bring that same confidence to more children and more families across the communities we serve.
