Behind the Lens: Moments of Hope, Connection and Transformation

This World Photography Day, take a look at some of our favorite photos from the past year and discover the stories behind the moments that have stayed with us.

August 19, 2026

A photo can capture more than a moment. It can preserve a feeling, mark a milestone or help us relive an unforgettable experience. Photography gives us a way to hold onto these stories and share them with the people who make our work possible—from patients and families to health care professionals, volunteers, partners and supporters around the world.

Behind every photo is a story.

This World Photography Day, we’re sharing a few photos that remind us why our work matters. Taken across our programs and communities, these images capture hope, compassion, resilience and connection—and the people who bring those values to life.

A Family’s Journey | Vietnam

A family portrait of Phúc with his parents and siblings in Hung Loi, Vietnam.

Phúc lives with his parents and four siblings in Hung Loi, a small farming village in northern Vietnam. His father, Lanh, works with the family harvesting cassava.

When 2-year-old Phúc needed care for his cleft lip, he traveled about three hours by bus to Hanoi with his father and his 8-year-old brother, Vien. At the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital, Phúc received the surgery his family had hoped for. When they returned home, his mother, Pha, and siblings were there to welcome them back.

Vien, too, continues to receive support through Operation Smile, including speech therapy to help him communicate more clearly. His father has been involved in his sessions, learning ways to support Vien at home.

This photo captures more than a joyful family portrait. It captures the people behind each patient’s journey—the parents, siblings and loved ones who care for them, support them and celebrate each milestone.

Sharing the Joy | Kenya

Nurse Florence Mangla, aka

For more than 30 years, Florence Mangula, known affectionately as “Mama Africa,” has volunteered with Operation Smile. As a volunteer nurse, educator and mentor, she has helped generations of patients and families feel supported during their care.

In this photo, Mama Africa shares a moment of joy with a mother holding her son after surgery. The mother’s smile captures the happiness of seeing her son after surgery, while Mama Africa’s warmth reflects the support volunteers bring to families throughout their care.

Volunteers like Mama Africa are there for each step of the journey, offering reassurance and sharing in the joy of families along the way.

Ready to Lead | Thailand

A group photo taken from above of the ISLC participants standing in at a pier in Bangkok, Thailand.

In July 2026, more than 300 student volunteers from around the world gathered in Bangkok, Thailand, for Operation Smile’s 34th International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC). Over the course of a week, students came together to learn, share experiences and explore new ways to make a difference in their communities.

ISLC gives young people the opportunity to build connections across cultures and develop the confidence and skills to turn their passion for service into action.

Student volunteers are already making a difference through fundraising, service projects, awareness campaigns and advocacy. They return home with new ideas, connections and a shared commitment to creating change.

A Lasting Impact | Madagascar

A group of women anesthesia providers in Madagascar during a training demonstration with a training dummy.

This photo was taken during a training in Madagascar, where anesthesia providers from Madagascar, Malawi and Kenya came together to build on their knowledge and skills in pediatric and cleft anesthesia care.

While this moment took place in Madagascar, it represents a much broader part of Operation Smile’s work. Training, mentorship and knowledge sharing help local health care professionals build on their expertise and expand the care available in their own communities.

This approach is central to Operation 100, our commitment to bringing care closer to home by strengthening district hospitals and equipping frontline health care workers to help build stronger local health systems for the communities we serve.

Every training is an investment in people, stronger health systems and the future of care.

A Future Full of Possibilities | Peru

Miguel and his infant daughter Margaret.

Growing up, Miguel underwent 10 surgeries as he navigated life with a cleft condition. His experience was shaped by the care and options available to him at the time—a very different path from the one now available to his daughter, Margaret.

Born with a cleft condition like her father, Margaret received surgery through Operation Smile when she was just 6 months old. For Miguel, seeing his daughter receive care so early represents more than a milestone for their family. It reflects the progress that can happen when access to specialized care increases, and health systems continue to evolve.

Miguel knows firsthand what it can mean to grow up with a cleft condition. His hope is that Margaret will have the opportunity to grow up happy, confident, and without ever feeling ashamed of her condition.

Their story is a reminder of what access to care can make possible for the communities we serve.

More moments are waiting to be captured
