Global Surgery Advocacy Programs
Our Global Surgery Advocacy Programs are working to create more equitable access to health care around the world.
The Global Surgery Advocacy Program (GSAP) works to close the surgical care gap in low- and middle-income countries. We empower the next generation of surgical advocates through training, mentorship, and community building — turning ideas into advocacy and advocacy into action.
GSAP is a joint initiative of Operation Smile, the University of Global Health Equity, and the Nkafu Policy Institute.
Our Mission
The Global Surgery Advocacy Program seeks to:
- Identify and support emerging global surgery leaders in low- and middle-income countries.
- Equip them to advocate for prioritizing surgical and anesthesia care with policymakers locally and globally.
- Build their skills in both grassroots and global advocacy.
- Strengthen a connected network of informed and confident surgery advocates across regions.
The Global Surgery Advocacy Fellowship
The Fellowship Program is a year-long immersive experience that builds advocacy and leadership capacity through three pillars: skills development, mentorship and a capstone advocacy project.
Mentorship is at the heart of the fellowship. Each participant is paired with a mentor who provides year-round guidance to help them refine their advocacy voice and become effective champions for access to safe, timely and affordable surgical and anesthesia care.
Since 2023, 19 fellows from across Africa and Latin America have completed the program — driving tangible policy conversations and community change.
Meet Our Fellows
The Global Surgery Advocacy Fellowship empowers and trains local leaders to be passionate, compassionate and skilled advocates for surgical and anesthesia care.
Meet Our Senior Fellows
The Senior Global Surgery Advocacy Fellows lend their extensive expertise and help to create change around the world.
The Global Surgery Advocacy Certificate Program
Launched in 2025, the certificate program is a six-month hybrid course designed for surgical leaders committed to transforming care in their home countries. Participants begin with in-person training and continue through interactive online seminars, translating lessons into real-world advocacy and leadership.
This program blends flexibility with depth — connecting participants with a global network of peers and experts while grounding learning in regional realities.
Applications for the 2026 cohort are not yet open; updates will be shared soon. Join our LinkedIn community to stay connected and receive the latest announcements.
