2019 Houston Smile Gala
On Friday, April 26th, Operation Smile hosted the 5th Annual Houston Smile Gala at Hotel ZaZa. At the event, Operation Smile recognized The Honorable Theresa Chang and Dr. Peter Chang with the John Connor Humanitarian Award, Hallie Vanderhider with the Universal Smile Award, and Tammy and Wayne Nguyen with the Wallis Annenberg Public Service Award. Event Chairs Duyen Huynh Nguyen, Sneha Merchant, and Viet Hoang were joined by more than 200 supporters for an evening of giving smiles and creating brighter futures for children worldwide.
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed an extensive silent auction, music by Bulbo, a shop to benefit area featuring Dr. Dane’s Conscious Living products, and a jewelry raffle featuring fine designs by Le Dragon d’Or. With support from the local community, students from Katy Westpark High School proudly presented a donation check to Operation Smile after a successful in-school fundraiser.
The highlight of the night came when former Operation Smile patient Chadleen performed “Rise Up” by Andra Day. From a young age, Chadleen knew she wanted to be a singer, but her cleft palate impaired her speech significantly. Chadleen’s parents spent years trying to find the means to secure surgery for her until finally, at four years old, Operation Smile medical volunteers came to their hometown of Cebu, Philippines. Operation Smile raised nearly $150,000 throughout the evening to support medical missions worldwide. To learn more about the 2020 Houston Smile Gala, visit www.operationsmile.org/houston.
