2017 LA Smile Gala

Sep 09 - Jun 19 2017

On September 9, 2017, Operation Smile held its 35th Anniversary Los Angeles Smile Gala at The Broad Stage to raise funds and awareness for children around the world suffering from cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.

At the event, "black-ish" star Tracee Ellis Ross presented the Universal Smile Award to Ashlee Simpson Ross and Evan Ross before Evan surprised the audience with a duet rendition of Eric Clapton’s “Change the World” with musician Austin Brown. As part of his message to guests, Evan stressed the importance of educating those that may not know about Operation Smile. “It’s about giving awareness. I don’t think a lot of people know about what’s going on and how many children are struggling with this. You can’t imagine the kind of confidence it gives them to know that there’s a way for them to feel comfortable with themselves, to be able to smile and to be able to feel a certain way about themselves. It’s powerful.”

Smile Ambassador Brooke Burke-Charvet presented the Medical Visionary Award to dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman, who first began supporting Operation Smile’s work in 2004. During his acceptance speech, Dr. Dorfman said “I’ve found that one of the most impactful ways to get involved in this cause is to spread the word – to family, friends, in person, on social media, or in the press. Talk to them about the life-long impact that we can make through their work. Explain that $240 can significantly change the life of an entire family, by giving their child a smile.”

Event Chair Roma Downey presented the John Connor Humanitarian Award to luxury realtor, Malibu Homes - Susan Monus, for her steadfast support for Operation Smile for over a decade. “A smile is a doorway to the soul and no child should have to face the world without it,” said Monus. Lionsgate TV Chairman Kevin Beggs, MGM Studios Television President Mark Burnett and NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke joined Roma Downey as co-chairs for the gala. The evening featured special performances by "America's Got Talent" stand-out Yoli Mayor and "World of Dance" winners, Les Twins. DJ Mix Master Mike Official of the Beastie Boys entertained guests at the after party.
