Ethicon US President reflects on Operation Smile medical mission

After an experience on a medical mission with Operation Smile, Tim Schmid, President of Ethicon US, returned home and sent the following letter to Ethicon employees dated July 1, 2014.

Dear Ethicon Associates,

Recently, my 6-year-old son asked me why I’ve been traveling so much. Rather than tell him about customer engagements, regional training meetings or surgical society conferences, I simply told him that I’ve been traveling to meet with remarkable people who help men, women and children live healthier, longer lives.

There may not be any more personal and meaningful example of this than our partnership with Operation Smile. For over 25 years, we have worked with Operation Smile to help transform lives, and in the last few years, we’ve taken this partnership a step further by mobilizing the caring power of our people in support of this humanitarian work. I could not be more proud of how we have all rallied as a US region to make a difference to thousands of children around the world. Thank you!

Two weeks ago, the entire US Regional Leadership Team (RLT) had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in an Operation Smile surgical mission in Bogota, Colombia. It is difficult to articulate how deeply impactful this experience was for us as a team, and for each person individually. I can, however, say that we were extremely humbled and honored to represent Ethicon, Johnson & Johnson and all of you, while there. On behalf of the RLT, I invite you to view a short video that captures our recent experience.

Our 2014 Operation Smile campaign is well underway and we have a number of exciting events planned through the second half of the year. We will also be offering more associates the opportunity to become Ethicon Smile Ambassadors on an upcoming mission trip. Stay tuned!

When I reflect on the question that my son asked me, it reminds me that the impact of the work we do every day isn’t really measured in dollars or units. Our impact is ultimately measured by the partnerships we enable and the lives that we help to improve and restore. Please continue to consider how you can support our 2014 Operation Smile campaign. Every child deserves a future filled with hope, and thanks to you we are giving many of them better odds of accomplishing this.

Once again, thank you!

Tim Schmid
