Saving Lives: Pass it On

Tom A. DiDonna, DHSc, ’10, MSN, RN, spends his vacations making a global impact. For the last 10 years, Dr. DiDonna has been a volunteer for Operation Smile, which provides life-saving corrective surgery to kids with severe clefts. Last year, Dr. DiDonna embarked on an international medical volunteer mission to the Republic of Namibia and South Africa to prevent the loss of fragile new life. He was one of the first master trainers in the Helping Babies Breathe program, which trains women who deliver babies in resource-poor countries how to resuscitate newborns. Operation Smile and the Helping Babies Breathe program, offered by the American Academy of Pediatrics, are now taught in tandem to create life-saving sustainability all over the world.

Fiona Kotur Partners with Hearsts to Create a Clutch Benefiting Operation Smile

Fiona Kotur has designed a bag to benefit Operation Smile with Gillian and Lydia Hearst. The philanthropic trio are all huge supporters of Operation Smile: Fiona consistently donates proceeds from her eponymous KOTUR bag line to Op Smile while Gillian and Lydia are Smile Ambassadors; both have gone on missions with the charity since 2005.

Two iconic brands, Lilly Pulitzer and NABISCO BARNUM’S ANIMALS crackers, are teaming up to launch 2 million limited-edition cracker boxes in a custom signature Pulitzer print and giving fans a way to track the famous boxes through the “Cracker Tracker.” As the adorable boxes create smiles nationwide, they also are creating awareness for children who can’t smile because of facial deformities.

Celebrities Ski to Support Operation Smile

Celebrities hit the Park City, Utah slopes Saturday morning to benefit Operation Smile. The Smile Ski Challenge was held at The Canyons Ski Resort and raised nearly $200,000, which would cover the cost of more than 800 surgeries. President of NBC Entertainment, Jennifer Salke, organized the event for a cause that she knows a bit about. Her son, Henry, was born with a cleft.

Shamrock Marathon Benefits Operation Smile

As part of the Operation Smile organization, Joshua Perez will have surgery this June to repair his cleft lip and cleft palette. The three-year-old is in Hampton Roads this weekend with his mother and grandmother to take part in the Shamrock Marathon, which in-part benefits Operation Smile.

Operation Smile India Treats 5,000th Patient in the State of Assam
At a ceremony organized at Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital in Panbazar today, Operation Smile India announced the completion of 5,000 life-changing surgeries in the state of Assam. The 5,000th surgery was conducted on February 9 on eight-month-old Bismita Rajbongshi who was born with a cleft lip.
