Born with a cleft lip, Jamila’s appearance was initially a shock to her mother, Nora. How would Jamila eat and drink? Would she make friends? Would she ever marry? Nora was worried and distraught. But there was no money for the surgery Jamila needed. All Nora could do was hope for outside help. That help came when Operation Smile sent a medical mission to the city of Fez in March 2006, four hours by bus from their village. Nora took Jamila to the mission site, where she was chosen to receive a free cleft lip surgery. It took about 45 minutes to repair this little girl’s lip. But her new, sweet smile will last a lifetime. Thank you for caring!
