Accreditations and Affiliations

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.

Operation Smile is rated as An OK Charity™. To be a member of the Operation Kids family of charities requires that current and prospective member charities meet strict criteria for effectiveness and efficiency in their fundraising and programs. These criteria fall under four categories: Fundamental Values, Program Effectiveness, Governance Board, and Financial and Accounting Measures.

Operation Kids is a 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to serve the needs of the Whole Child… their education, safety, environment, health, welfare and well being… by supporting a diverse group of effective and deserving children's charities with funds and other resources. Operation Kids reviews the operational efficiency and program effectiveness of noteworthy charities. Charities that serve children and meet its stringent proprietary criteria are eligible to be called 'OK Charities,' and may receive funds and other resources from Operation Kids' fund and awareness-raising efforts.

Operation Smile is a member of Independent Charities of America (ICA). A charity may only gain membership in ICA if it is incorporated in the United States, is an IRS-certified 501(c)(3) organization, provides programs and services to populations in at least 15 states or one or more foreign countries, and operates with high efficiency and less than 25% overhead, as verified by an annual independent financial audit conducted by a certified public accountant.

Independent Charities of America (ICA) is an IRS-recognized nonprofit association of America's best charities. Its purpose is to represent charities that meet the highest standards of public accountability and program effectiveness and to facilitate gifts to those charities from contributors in fund drives conducted at work and on the Internet. ICA is inclusive in its membership policies and welcomes charities of all types, providing they meet ICA's eligibility standards.

ICA was founded in 1988 by a group of volunteers led by James J. Casimir, then the National Director of Appeals for the Internal Revenue Service and now an executive with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.

Operation Smile is a member of Children’s Charities of America (CCA). As a CCA member, Operation Smile has to continuously demonstrate in its work the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness and cost efficiency.

Children's Charities of America is a coalition comprised of more than 100 of the finest charitable organizations dedicated to meeting the needs of children. Their mission is twofold: First, to heighten public awareness of children's issues and the solutions to their problems. Second, to help their member agencies raise funds mainly through participation in workplace campaigns. Through its member organizations, CCA is striving to give children all over the world a fighting chance at a brighter tomorrow and a more fulfilling future.

Operation Smile is a United Nations Affiliated Organization.

Operation Smile is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) associated with the United Nation’s Department of Public Information (DPI). As such, Operation Smile acts as a liaison to the United Nations. Criteria for association with the DPI of the United Nations are that the NGO must support and respect the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and have a clear mission statement. The NGO must be recognized nationally or internationally; should operate solely on a not-for-profit basis and have tax-exempt status. The NGO must have the commitments and means to conduct effective information programs to its constituents and a broader audience about United Nations activities and should have an established record of continuity of work and show promise of sustained activity in the future. All NGOs that are associated with the United Nations must have a satisfactory record of collaboration with the United Nations, have audited financial statements, and have statutes/bylaws providing for a transparent process of making decisions, elections of officers and members of the Board of Directors.

Operation Smile Appears in Forbes Survey of 200 Largest Charities

Operation Smile has been a member of "Forbes 200" since 2001. This annual survey of charities provides basic data on each charity's financial performance. The list is in two parts. The first covers revenues and expenses, and the second contains Forbes' analysis based on three ratios.

Charitable commitment:
This shows how much of the money a nonprofit spent went to its charitable purpose, as opposed to management, overhead or fundraising.

Fundraising efficiency:
This measures how much of the money raised from private sources was left after fundraising expenses.

Donor dependency:
This reveals how much of a nonprofit's surplus came from private support as opposed to, say, investment gains or sale of goods. A 100% or higher ratio means the nonprofit was totally dependent on gifts to make ends meet.
